Our Approach

We Follow the Child

We use Natural Environment Teaching (NET) and incorporate learning into the child's natural environment.

Instead of expecting a child to stop what they are doing to complete a series of structured tasks, we look for opportunities within what they are already interested in.

If a child loves cars, we may use cars to work on communication, turn-taking, or social interaction. If they want to play outside, we may use that time to practice functional skills, independence, or following directions.

Their interests are not a distraction from learning. They are often where learning begins.

Connection Comes First

Before we expect a child to learn from us, we want them to feel comfortable with us.

We prioritize building genuine rapport between the child and their technician. Our goal is for the child to see their technician as someone they enjoy being around, playing with, and learning from.

We want children to feel motivated to participate because the experience is meaningful and enjoyable, not because they are simply expected to comply.

Assent Matters

We believe children deserve a voice in their care.

Our approach is assent-based. We do not believe therapy should be built around forcing compliance.

We consider the whole child when we plan and deliver services. A child who did not sleep well, is recovering from an illness, is overwhelmed, or is simply having a difficult day may need something different from us.

We adjust.

We look at what the child is communicating through their behavior and consider what may be creating a barrier to participation. Our goal is to work with the child, not against them.

We Don't Try to Change Who They Are

Our goal is not to make children look or behave more like their typically developing peers.

Every child comes to us with their own personality, strengths, interests, communication style, and way of experiencing the world.

We start with where the child is today. From there, we work to expand their current skills and teach new skills that are meaningful to their everyday life.

We focus on skills that can help a child communicate their wants and needs, build relationships, become more independent, navigate their environment, and participate in the activities that matter to them.

Behavior Is Communication

We don't view children as “good” or “bad” based on their behavior.

We look at behavior as wanted or unwanted behavior and, most importantly, we ask why it is happening.

We want to understand the function behind behavior and teach children meaningful ways to communicate, regulate, cope, and navigate situations that may be difficult for them.

Our approach is person-centered and trauma-informed. We consider the child's experiences, needs, preferences, strengths, and environment when making clinical decisions.

Learning Should Feel Like Life

Children spend enough of their lives being asked to sit, listen, and complete tasks.

We want therapy to fit into their lives rather than taking them away from it.

That may mean learning through play, practicing communication during snack, working on social skills with siblings, building independence during a family routine, or practicing skills in the community.

Real life is the classroom

Real life is the classroom.

At EverHaven, we are intentional about the care we provide because we believe families deserve to feel confident in the services their children receive.

We are not here to simply provide hours of ABA.

We are here to build meaningful skills, honor individuality, support families, and help children thrive in their everyday lives.
